Try 04:17
Try It didn’t take two seconds to know the distance she could go Another chance for you to explain the thunder and the rain If you can climb up the wall There’s a place you can call when You can break the reverie of thought dreams unseen Another day off the clock Go outside and take it all in stride A simple thought on the machinery That lives inside of me If you can climb up the wall There’s a place you can call when You can break the reverie of thought dreams unseen Wait, don’t stop Go, don’t hesitate Wait, don’t stop Go, don’t hesitate Whoever said we couldn’t try? It didn’t take two seconds to know she’d never want to go Another trip down the hallway of guilt A memory you built If you can climb up the wall There’s a place you can call when You can break the reverie of thought dreams unseen Wait, don’t stop Go, don’t hesitate Wait, don’t stop Go, don’t hesitate Wait, don’t stop Go, don’t hesitate Wait, don’t stop Go, don’t hesitate Whoever said we couldn’t try? Whoever said we shouldn’t try? Whoever said it’s time for goodbye?

Immaculate Reception Now you see it, Now you don’t, I'm erased, Like a modern day saint, You're a witness, I’m a flaw - a mistake, On a day to day basis, We’re just flinging matter upon a statue in your name, Glad you came, So I notice that you’re gone, But my vision is blurred around the edges, Doesn’t matter what you see, Give, take or receive, Data you retrieve, Doesn’t matter where you go, What you tell or show, Who you think you know, Now you see it, And I don’t, Create a temporary memory, A witness, I’m a God - a mistake, An immaculate reception, There’s a body standing in my doorway I can’t discern, So I’ll burn, I think it’s still there, But my vision is blurred around the edges, Doesn’t matter what you see, Give, take or receive, Data you retrieve, Doesn’t matter where you go, What you tell or show, Who you think you know, Deep beneath a shroud of dust, Someone you could trust - somewhere you could breath, I'm a civil servant in the afterlife, Trying to conceive - make one more believe.

Slipstream 02:50
Slipstream The last thing I remembered seeing was you, You almost came too, I almost pulled you through, I'm caught beneath a wave crashing down on the sky, I'm holding you high, And there's something about you, There's something about you, Here with me now in the storm, Like a million times, Like a million times before, I can't walk through the door, Let's drift into a slipstream, Just you and me, Where we don't need to breathe, Where we don't need to see, I'm caught beneath a wave crashing down on the sky, I'm holding you high, And there's something about you, There's something about you, Here with me now in the storm, Like a million times, Like a million times before, I can't walk through the door, And there's something about you, There's something about you, Here with me now in the fog, Let's disappear in the slipstream, Let's disappear in the slipstream, Floating up, It won't be long.

Modern Romance Two can play at the game never seeing no one except themselves, The mirror never lies but that’s why you can edit (adjust your life), You’re independent, You don’t need someone’s opinions to love yourself, You’re all alone now and connected to the millions, Do you love yourself? I can take the chance that you don’t want to take, I’ll keep the word that you don’t want to break, And then we’ll dance, Never looking down at the steps we take, Modern romance, Two can play at the game never seeing no one except themselves, The mirror never lies but that’s just an opinion when it’s your device, You’re independent and connected to the millions, Do you have the time?, You’re too busy to be expected to love yourself, There’s a place where they can’t reach us, What they don’t know they can’t teach us, I can take the chance that you don’t want to take, I’ll keep the word that you don’t want to break, And then we’ll dance, Never looking down at the steps we take.

Weights + Feathers I’ve been shaking my head, I never wanted to, I’ve been sick and in bed, I know you’ve been there too, Something’s sticking inside, I’m ready to confide in you, Just pickin' on words and wine, With something left to prove, I know after all I’ve done to you I shouldn’t ask, But for the first time in my life I’m taking off this mask, There’s a hundred little pieces left to stick together, But after letting it drop I feel light as a feather, I’ve been taking my time, And letting it unwind, Unravel and fray and tear, I’m trying not to stare, You’ve been looking at me, And trying not to see, I’ve been looking at you, And trying not to do, I know after all I’ve done to you I shouldn’t ask, But for the first time in my life I’m taking off this mask, There’s a hundred little pieces left to stick together, But after letting it drop I feel light as a feather, I know after all I’ve promised you I shouldn’t ask, And at the risk of sounding too cliche I want you back, There’s a hundred little pieces left to stick together, But after letting it drop I feel light as a feather, I hope that you’ll be there for me when I show my hand, I hope that you’ll be understanding when the shit hits the fan, I know I haven’t always stood where I said I’d stand, But if you want to I'll be there for you and me if you can.

I Love Lucid 01:32

The Great Reflector I awoke like you suffocating through a burlap sack, Knives and polyester at your back, And there was napalm in the air and drops of dew, I want to lead but I don’t want to deceive you, I breathe - I’m alive, I asked the machine what she dreams, She told me "I dream of the place where we’re born”, Chase me down and tear me limb from limb, And leave me on the ground, Don’t ask me why I walked away, I did not run, I stayed when you got close then I played dead, I want to lead but I don’t want to deceive you, I breathe - I’m alive, I asked the machine what she dreams, She told me "I dream of the place where we’re born, where galaxies are formed,” I bow, like you to the great reflector.

Empty Shells 03:55
Empty Shells You walk like a man I know, I think I’ve seen you before, Can you tell me where I can get off this ride? There’s some clues I’d rather not follow, Fill all the shells that are hollow, Drink for me all the words I can’t swallow, And the season’s ripe for a field trip to the hollows, No need to explain what I said, You twisted all the words that you tried to teach me, And now there’s no response when you try to reach me, I tell myself it’s all so far beneath me, But somehow I still eat when you try to feed me, So tick all the talks that we shared, Remember the times that I cared, Keep the light on if you’re scared, Keep whatever you think’s fair, You twisted all the words that you tried to teach me, And now there’s no response when you try to reach me, I tell myself it’s all so far beneath me, But somehow I still eat when you try to feed me.

Alternate End I wanted to call, But my fear broke in and I stalled, You, Contemptuous and confused, Had aligned your crosshairs to shoot, Shoot, Take me down to the range, String me up when they call out your name, In sight is what you thought we could be, Now I'm far too obstructed for you to see me, Nothing is left but the dregs, I was unjaded - in over my head, Dead, I don't know where to come in, How to speak, How to think to begin, Like you'd already confessed, You let him watch while you'd undress, Now what kind of tramp defines themselves by success? I'd deceived and you'd believed, Is this machine just a weapon to me? Vanished, Now I dare not ask, Had your diatribe not taken me to task, Perhaps there's an alternate end, Some kind of twist, Some kind of fold or a bend, Like you'd already confessed, You'd let him watch while you'd undress, Now what kind of tramp defines themselves by success? Oh now, you've gone done it again.

about

For the past year, Marlon Chaplin has released - one by one - all but two songs from his new album, Synestalgia.

It is a sprawling, sonically rich work (his first full length since 2018's The Circle) and along with nearly every one of those tracks, creative and eye-grabbing music videos accompanied.

Produced by Ewan Kay (Austra, Moon King, Kontravoid), the album strikes a balance between the collaborators that marries modern psychedelic production with Chaplin's gift for crafting memorable hooks and spellbinding lyrics. The two play every instrument on the record, save for drums provided by Spencer Cole of Weaves.
